We drove out into the middle of nowhere today to one of the city’s landfill locations, to drop off a chair my cat peed all over last October. We sat in line behind a bunch of actual garbage trucks, which gave us both a gnawing out-of-place feeling, as the heat blew sand all around us, and the mountains watched from a distance.

There were birds everywhere, but mostly in a circular, swirling cluster surrounding the pile of human bullshit at the top of this hill.

The whole experience cost us $68, three of which went to a little bright yellow safety vest that the girl wore, along with her flip-flops, as she hauled the chair out of the back of the car and into the pile.

And then we drove off, back down the hill and towards the grocery store that will feed us and the machine and the air and the water, on and on forever amen.
